New in 2011, the feedback from guests has already been heart-warming: “So if you want tranquillity, wide open spaces, 30 minutes from a major historic city, unbelievable comfort and luxury on tap, then Craigengar is a must… we totally loved it.” Other Trip Advisor reviews are peppered with phrases like completely brilliant, unbelievably beautiful, amazing, idyllic, luxurious and jaw-droppingly wonderful and guests write in immense detail about what so impressed them.

For some it’s the floor to ceiling picture windows, the high curved ceilings, the mood lighting, the sound system, or the wonderfully practical huge wardrobes in which to tuck away bulky suitcases and their contents. For others our emphasis on customer care enhances their experience, or they are blown away by the individually designed bedrooms with TVs and luxurious en-suite bathrooms tiled in natural stone.

Other much praised features are the appealing mix of soft furnishings and eclectic furniture, the bedroom balcony overlooking the hills and water, the location of the house in a field all to itself on the Pentland Hills. “It’s the detailed thought that has gone into the entire design that really impresses...” and is paying dividends in guest satisfaction.

With the whole layout flowing harmoniously from the black marbled floor on entry, through the double glazed doors and into the light and airy hallway with honey coloured flagstones, the feeling of social space and contemporary grandeur is striking. A splendid bespoke ash and metal staircase with tension wire balustrade leads upstairs to more bedrooms and a spacious Gallery Area. A huge treasure trove of a cupboard houses games, books jigsaws and toys for all ages. Alternatively up to 6 people can relax, read or watch TV or a DVD in this attractive break-away area overlooking the main living area which seats at least 12 comfortably.

This stunning contemporary eco-friendly self-catering house has uninterrupted views of the hills, water and skies, all viewed from an extraordinarily well equipped open plan kitchen / dining and living area with luxurious leather sofas to sink into. Hardwood oak flooring and natural stone floors throughout are enhanced by oriental rugs and Isle of Skye natural white, brown and capuccino sheepskins.

Setting off the framed original paintings throughout the house are neutral white walls. And drawing the eye to the focal point of the gable end wall is the hearth. Beneath an intriguing piece of artwork sits a multi-fuel stove surrounded by two stunning slabs of horizontal and vertical granite. It’s there not just as a focal point but for those who love the ambience of a real fire. However heat-wise you don’t need it; the underfloor heating, powered by a geo-thermal heat pump, ensures a constant warmth.

Well away from the living area, and housed in a separate spacious utility room, are the washing machine, tumble drier and American style fridge-freezer with ice-dispenser, along with the heat source pump. Installing all this here ensures background noise is minimised to allow guests to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere in the living areas.

Adjacent to the Utility Room is a roomy cloakroom allowing you to shut the door on all your fishing or golf paraphernalia, store your boots, hang up all your outdoor clothes, and rake through our large store of wellie boots to find the right size for you to roam our farmland.

But holidays are not just about wonderful houses…you need fun experiences to share amongst the group and recall down the years… maybe a mix of indoor pampering and outside physical challenges. Stir in some merriment and you have the perfect recipe!

What’s in it for kids?


Outside they discover a nature playground with acres of farmland to wander, wild-life and animal antics to watch and enjoy. Crosswoodhill has cows, calves and sheep.
Watch the shepherd and his dogs at work in the close-by sheep pens. This is Agritourism at its most authentic.
Simple pleasures kick in: ball games or rounders in the field surrounding the house, a picnic up the hill, paddling in the burn, relaxing with a good book on the outside decking…
Exclusive to Craigengar is a family basket swing, single swings and climbing frame, and a sandpit: lovely robust, safe, natural wooden play equipment offering a challenge for even the most adventurous and imaginative children.
And inside, the house is big enough for children to migrate to different parts of the house.
Lots of board and card games, jigsaws, a variety of toys and books for all ages.
With 7 DVD players ( bring your own DVDs) and 7 TVs dotted around the house for those who want them there’s plenty of scope for selectiveness!

Our central location between Edinburgh and Glasgow is a winner with airports, motorways and key rail links all within a 40 minute drive. Arrive refreshed whether you are part of a bridal party, meeting up with friends, family, business colleagues, working away from home as part of a team or travelling up for an event? Maybe you are setting up exhibitions at Ingliston or engaged in specialist contract work locally or in Edinburgh? With plenty of parking space, this house works as well for small corporate lets or brainstorming sessions, as it does for orderly hen and stag stays amd friends holidaying together.

With this larger property, Craigengar, we can be more flexible with arrival and departure dates or short breaks than we are able to be with Orlege End and our other 2 smaller properties. 

Our preferred pattern however is a Friday to Monday, a Friday to Friday, a Monday to Monday or  weekdays between Monday to Friday.

If you email us your dates and guest numbers, depending on availability we will work out a suitable rental for Craigengar for you to consider. With this property only, we usually charge an all-in rental inclusive of fuel and electricity other than logs / coal for the optional multi-fuel stove. Rentals start at £1100 for a winter Friday to Monday weekend, £1700 for a full 7 day week and rise as the year progresses.
